Since the last newsletter, we have experienced the depths of a Cornish winter and moved swiftly on to Spring!
In comparison to many parts of the country, Newquay does not often see snow. It last snowed in November 2005, but prior to that the last major snowfall was twenty years previously, when in January 1985, snow in St Mawgan was measured as being 12cm deep.
In case you were not around earlier this month, it snowed for little more than a day. As near as Bodmin, there was still snow after a week.

The weather brought transport and roads to a halt and a certain supermarket down the road had no fruit, veg, meat or dairy for a couple of days. There has since been uproar as incredulous customers are unable to understand why the supermarket’s distribution depot is out of county.
Although, farmers Jim and Keith didn’t really relish it in the cold, they went to our very own ‘distribution centre’ a few hundred metres away and pulled leeks, celeriac, swede and other veg out of the ground, ensuring that our veg shelves remained fully stocked throughout!
The frost has had an inevitable but minor effect on vegetables, resulting in slightly more waste than usual.
The cold weather has now moved swiftly on to milder temperatures and the sun has even been out a few times this week. In fact our first broad beans have appeared – a sure sign that Spring is here. I hope we haven’t spoken too soon!
Another sure sign of spring is the sight of baby lambs out in the field. The warmer weather has enabled Farmer Jim to turn out the baby lambs and their mothers a few days after being born. The ewes give birth in our sheds and the ewes and lambs spend their first few days together in there.
