new season hispi cabbage
We hope to have the first strawberries of the year from Mitchell Fruit Farm this week.

We have also started getting Cornish asparagus in with Tegassow asparagus hopefully available from later this week.
The season for this vegetable is extremely short - typically two months from May. As well as being simply delicious served with a knob of butter, asparagus has many properties that make it extremely healthy and gives your immune system a real boost!
It contains high levels of vitamin A, folic acid and dietary fibre all believed to play an important role in the fight against cancer.
Vitamin A is an antioxidant and protects body cells from damage caused by free radicals. Folic acid plays a preventative role, whilst the dietary fibre keeps bowels regular and protects bowel cells from cancer-causing damage.
Asparagus also contains high levels of potassium. Combined with the folic acid and the soluble fibre, asparagus is also known to be good for heart health by controlling blood pressure.
The folic acid is invaluable to expectant mothers as it helps prevent infection, aids iron absorption and is necessary in the proper development of the baby.
Asparagus is also one of the richest sources of rutin. This helps the body to develop an effective immune system, as well as helping prevent the rupturing of blood capillaries such as in haemorrhoids.
Its high potassium and low sodium content make it a mild diuretic; useful for processing proteins, getting rid of excess water and detoxifying the body.
The presence of Vitamins C and E are good for hair, skin and nails.
It is very low in calories with less than 4kcal per average spear.
However, there are differences in opinion in the world of science over whether asparagus is an effective aphrodisiac. We’ll have to leave that for you to judge!

On the farm, we had delivery of our Christmas geese. They come into us as day old goslings.

They will stay indoors under controlled conditions for approximately 6 weeks, until they are old enough to come and go as they please – they will have the shed and will be free to roam one of our fields. As winter draws nearer they will be outdoors during the day and put indoors overnight.

We have frozen geese from last Christmas available with 20% discount.
